I
delivered my son Bradley at 29 weeks, 2 days via emergency C-section. He was
born 2lbs, 3oz. We spent a total of 70 days in Rush NICU.
I can honestly say
this is one of the hardest things my husband Ross and I had to go through. More
so for Ross as I was in pretty bad shape myself due to severe preeclampsia.
I
was finally able to meet by baby boy 48hrs post-delivery and pretty much never
left his side until discharge day.
I
was hopeful!
I
was determined!
I
knew Bradley would pull through because he is a fighter just like his mom.
I
was blissfully in the world we created for Bradley in his room not thinking
about what's the worst that could happen because he had been progressing well.
I had my first breakdown when I heard over the intercom "all available
staff report to Pod B" and I saw the staff rush past Bradley's room.
Then
it hit me, another child was in distress and how lucky we were that Bradley was
doing well. I had my second breakdown in the NICU when I heard the call again a
few weeks later.
I know for a fact that we are blessed that Bradley is doing well. I also know that things could have gone in the other direction. I owe Bradley's and my recovery to the nurses, doctors, and NICU staff that take such great care of our preemies. They also taught me how to properly care for Bradley and made me more confident being a new mom.
We just celebrated Bradley being home for one year-Feb. 2- and bought pizza and salad for the NICU. I know this couldn’t fully repay them for all of their hard work but we hope this shows a token of our appreciation.
